Your Ferret
Although traditionally associated with rural households, ferrets make very good urban pets and are becoming increasingly popular. We have certainly noticed more ferrets coming in every year.
They are relatively easy to keep although they should not be in the same house as rabbits, guinea pigs and other prey animals! They are also exceptionally good escape artists so care is needed in the choice of cage.
Like all species they have their own set of disease predilections. Interestingly they are particularly prone to hormonal abnormalities created by tumours of the pancreas or adrenal gland. They are also susceptible to human influenza so limit your exposure to your ferret if you think you have ‘flu.
A special mention must be made of neutering in ferrets. In both sexes it decreases odour and in females it is essential to prevent the development of persistent oestrus which can have life-threatening consequences.
