Weight Clinics

Obesity is now as common in dogs and cats as it is in people. An estimated 60% in the UK are overweight and whilst this is occasionally related to a medical disorder, it is usually due to overfeeding. Obesity can cause many problems including joint and heart conditions as well as diabetes and urinary complaints because of the extra strain it puts on every part of the body.

We’ve all been tempted to give our pet a little extra food because we feel sorry for them or guilty for leaving them home alone. Although your pet may appreciate this extra bit of food, a walk to the park or playing with him for 5 minutes will be much more of a reward. Exercise is an important factor in weight loss and control.

Simple steps can be taken to reduce your pet’s weight but firstly we will look at the feeding and eating habits of your pet. Your pet’s individual needs will be taken into consideration and a diet plan suggested. Sometimes it is as simple as changing to a light diet but the most important factor is that everyone understands that they are doing this to help their companion towards a longer, happier life and must not feel sorry for him or her. If you think your pet may be a little on the podgy side then please feel free to pop in or ring for some advice.
