Flea and Worming Advice

Fleas

Small flea, big problem! Fleas are a concern to most pet owners regardless of their immediate environment. One flea can lay up to 1000 eggs, which will lay dormant in your carpets and floor boards until the correct climate for hatching is reached. This can be anything up to two years! Prevention is far better than cure so we stock a range of highly effective and easily administered products for cats, dogs and rabbits.

Merial have recently launched a new version of the ever popular “Frontline”. The new “Frontline Combo” combines the power of Fipronil (the active ingredient in “Frontline”) and S-methoprene which is an environmental agent. S-methoprene attaches to the fur and dander of your pet and as their coat is shed, the environment gets treated too.

Prices for “Frontline Combo” start at £36.50 for a six-month supply for a cat and between £45.70 - £54.25 for a six-month supply for your dog depending on their weight.

We also stock “Stronghold” which is another spot on for fleas. This has the added bonus that it also treats Toxocara roundworms (important for pets around children), prevents heartworm disease (important for pets travelling abroad), ear mites in cats and sarcoptic mange in dogs. A three-month supply of “Stronghold” for a cat costs £22.30. For dogs the price ranges from £21.90 - £32.35 depending on their weight, again for a three-month supply.
Worms

Intestinal worms can live in your dog or cat without displaying any external signs, but left untreated they can be detrimental to your pet’s long-term health, as well as your own. The most common worms are roundworms and tapeworms. Toxocara roundworms can be passed on to people, especially children, so it is prudent to keep on top of these. They should be treated with either “Panacur”, “Milbemax” or “Stronghold” on a monthly basis. “Milbemax” will also kill off all the other roundworms, tapeworms and heartworm that your pet may have come into contact with. We recommend that you treat your pet at least annually with “Milbemax” but more often if it is a cat that hunts, or a dog that you walk in Richmond Park or any area where he or she can come into contact with sheep and deer.

If you are unsure what flea or worming regime your pet needs, please do not hesitate to ring us here at the surgery as we appreciate it is going to be different for every pet.
